When Toyota announced its return to the World Rally Championship in 2015, the concept of building a rally-inspired sports car was part of the plan. The vision was to take technical knowledge and experience from the highest level of international competition and apply them to a new road car that is also suitable for competition driving, and an affordable proposition for customers. So was born the GR Yaris.
The GR Yaris is built on a unique light-weight platform combining aluminium body panels and a forged carbon composite roof in the body structure which brings the total ker weight to 1280kg.
The car is powered by a 1.6-liter in-line three-cylinder direct-injection turbo engine, which has the world's highest maximum output for a three-cylinder engine of 200 kW (272 PS) and 360Nm of torque. Combined with a six-speed iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission), which makes rhythmical gear changes possible, this engine provides overwhelming acceleration and allows users to experience an increase in engine revolutions that feels good.
Furthermore, the newly developed "GR-FOUR" sports 4WD system, which uses a front and rear variable driving force system enabled by a multi-plate clutch, transfers the power of the new engine to all four wheels with minimal loss. Freedom of driving force distribution between the front and rear wheels has been increased, making possible delicate control that matches road surface conditions.
The GR Yaris Circuit Pack provides lightweight 18-inch BBS forged alloys with Michelin Pilot 4S high-performance tyres, retuned suspension, front and rear limited-slip differentials and red-painted brake callipers.
