The GTO debuted in October 1990 as an all-out sportscar, something Mitsubishi had not produced for some time. The name, of course, was taken from the famous Galant GTO, and you can tell that the expectations for this car in Mitsubishi were high just by the fact it was given this name.
The styling was a very typical Mitsubishi design, aimed clearly towards the American market. When looking at the car from above, the bottle shape of the car, narrowing quite a bit at the doors, was impressive, and attracted much attention in its time.
This car was not just admired for looks, as many of its mechanisms were ingeniously designed. The chassis was specially developed based on the all-wheel control that Mitsubishi was focusing on at the time, and included advanced features such as full-time 4WD, 4WS, electronically controlled suspension, and ABS. It was also equipped with an active aerodynamics system where the front and rear spoilers are adjusted according to speed, and was given an active exhaust system that controlled exhaust sound. Its many high-tech features utilising electronic control and variable mechanisms added to the uniqueness of the GTO.
